Mybook Rescue tool

E-mail Print PDF

The Mybook Rescue Tool is an easy solution to restore a bricked Mybook to it's original configuration, without loosing the data.

This feature is only available to donators.

Disclaimer :  I have tested several times my tool , but i do not want to be responsible or injuried if you loose your data using it. Use at your own risks. Please, do not use any of the tools provided in this site if your Mybook is critical for your job, life , security of other people etc...What is Mybook Rescue Tool ?

If you have been playing around too much by installing Linux hacks from several sites and now your Mybook does not boot anymore, then you will probably be happy to use this tool.

Mybook Rescue Tool is only working on WhiteLight, SINGLE DRIVE Mybooks of any sizes. ( If you have a double Drive Mybook, do not use this procedure.) .

How does it work ?

The main prerequisite is to plug the Hard Drive to your Windows Computer using one of the following methods :

     - Plug via the internal SATA connection

     - Plug via an external SATA / USB adapter (20€) .

The rescue Tool will :

   - Provide a simple user interface to make it easy (and safe) to perform this operation. ( The interface will detect  the Mybook Harddrives, display information to allow you to be check that it is the correct hard drive that is selected,  and will launch the correct commands lines, using the windows "dd" utility)

   - Copy a new Mybook Image on the System Partitions of your Mybook . ( all Hacks , configurations and created users that have been made will be deleted. All the Mybook Configuration need to be redone after the rescue Procedure.)

   - The rescue tool does not touch the Data Partition ( Any Data that is on the 4th PArtition remains untouched. )

   - Restore the original MAcAddress that your original Mybook had.

Procedure is the following :

1) Remove the Hard drive from your Mybook . You can follow the provided procedure :

2) Plug the SATA hard drive on your Windows Computer :

   - USing a SATA/USB adapter ( 20€)

   - Using your Computer internal SATA connectivity ( require to open your windows Computer...)

3) Download the Rescue Tool from the Donator's Space

Download the MybookRescue.rar file (100mb) , then unrar on your windows disk :  when unrared , it will take 3,5 GB.

Please, ensure that you have the necessary disk space on your Windows Computer, before you start downloading...

4) unrar the Mybook Rescue Tool within a Folder that do not contain any spaces. I recommend C:\MybookRescue :

then double click on the MybookRescue.vbs file. If a warning is displayed, please accept to run it.

5) a Welcome message is displayed :

Click NEXT

6) Select the Mybook's Hard Drive

Normally, only drives with 4 partitions are displayed,  in most situation  , you should have only one choice possible : Your Mybook's Hard Drive.

Click Next ( you can click safely, as another confirmation message will appear after )

7) Double- Check and confirm the Hard drive :

This step is the very last step before performing the action. Please double check carefully :

Read the selected partitions names and associated size in the displayed Window, and Double check that the sizes matches in the textarea below. ( see screen shot)

If they do not match, then Click CANCEL, and search for a different solution for rescueing your Mybook.

If all Sizes are matching, then, you can click Next.

As soon as you click Next, the Image copy starts to your Mybook 's Drive :

This should take 1 hour.

At the end of the copy, a message is displayed " Images have been applied".

8) Now you can plug back your Hard Drive to your Mybook and boot on it.

You will be asked the same questions as the very first time that you used your Mybook ( Accept eula, timezone, DHCP or Static configuration) I do not describe this here, as you have already done it once...

9) Activate SSH ,(launch the Western Digital interface ( user=admin / password=admin) , go to SYSTEM / Advanced , and click Enable SSH)

10) if you had previously some customized shares, you will need to recreate all of them , with the exact same name. to retrieve the list of shares that you had previously created , connect via PUTTY and launch the following command  :

ls /DataVolume

Note all names , except  Download, Public, _torrent_, jewab.

for each of the other folder names, you need to recreate the shares using the Western Digital interface.

==> on the Western Digital interface, go to the Storage / Shared Folders configuration

And create new shares with the exact same names ( Case sensitive) as they were previously.

11) now , you should have your Public and other shares back wit their data....  ( :-) )

==> I recommend that your next step is to install the Feature Pack Manager , and May be configure the MybookClone FeaturePack, to have a daily backup of your Mybook...

Mybook Rescue is only available to donators,
Download the tool here :

The Mybook Rescue Tool has not been sufficient to rescue/unbrick your Mybook or you want to format  a brand new disk  as a Mybook Disk ?
if the rescue failed, then you need to reformat completely your Mybook using the MybookFormat tool :
I recommend the following procedure :
1) Buy a brand new disk with more or equal disk space than your existingMybook (buy Western Digital Caviar  green hard drive.)
2) Apply the Mybook Format tool + Mybook Rescue tool to this brand new disk to format the new drive with Mybook System.
3) Plug the old drive to your blank new system via usb
4) Copy your old data to your blank new system ( i can send you the command line to do this by email.)
5) Use your old disk as a backup disk, using MybookClone, so that you will never need again Mybook Rescue tool :-).

Please, note that the Mybook Format tool  (re-)prepare a hard disk as a mybook disk ( with correct partitions ) : this tool  DEFINITELY DELETE ALL THE DATA THAT WAS ON THE MYBOOK.

Hi All, Thanks in advance for helping me, I'm really desperate. I have a 4tb My book Live Duo, and I format both discs for stupid reasons outside the unit, now when the unit is on the light is yellow and I can not locate it.
Is there any way to recover the system, I have no data on the disks.

no luck

i ran the rescue tool and it did what is billed as, but i believe the network controller is bad on my board only one light is on on activity light is working; all i need is to see my data and copy it to my pc i have connected via the internal sata controller it sees the drive but reports unrecognized partition healthy

i have repeated the process a couple of times but the drive can not be found with the WD discovery tool it is not a surprise since the network card seems to be the problem any ideas on how to retrieve the data on the drive i have a new 3 tb WD live book that i could just copy the stuff over to if i could only see it i also have Ubuntu ready to go if needed

teinturman :
you could try the "UFS explorer" tool , another user reported that it worked for him,

hi teinturman:,

I try to install a new 2TB disk in my Mybook.
I formatted the disk, using you vbs script and restored the part ions with our rescue vbs script.

When I reconnect the disk in the my book, it start automatically and shuts itself down after about 1 a 2 min.
Then I press the power button, the leds are light up. After a while all leds are flashing.

When I login to the web qui, I see an error.
[Volume Status] Data Volume "DataVolume" doesn't exist!"

I think the datavolume isn't formatted.

I did formatted and rescue several time, but still the same problem.

How can I solve the problem?

teinturman :

Several points :
1) if the mybook contineu shut down after 1 or 2 minutes, it means that you have used a non Western digital disk.( if you are in this situation , i will send you the procedure to solve that. )
if the mybook did this one time opnly, then it is normal.

2) the Datavolume does not exist error can occur, ( is still need to understand in which situation this occurs) .
please, send a contact message to me, so that we solve this issue together online, via a teamviewer session.

Bricking after data recovery (pt 2)

Hi again,
Gutted the malfunctioning MBWE and mounted the disk into a USB enclosure. Ubuntu recognises it as a degraded 2.0GB RAID array with 4 components. Which is a neat trick on a 1.0TB hard drive. So ... I guess that the recovery tool did something naughty (or possibly the Win7 subsystems on the machine I did the recovery on. [Rude words]
The disk utility gives me various information ... but I can't copy'n'paste it here.

So ... I mounted the 997GB partition, despite the array being degraded.
Re-checked dmesg ; nothing added.
Looks like all my data is there, but with the RAID arrays degraded ... that would probably explain why the MBWE isn't booting.
So .... what to do now? Read, think and sleep, in about that order.

Bricking after data recovery

Hi Teinturman,
I have a broken (I think) MBWE.
A few days ago, the wife deleted some files (30-thousand of them!) from the MBWE. The backup was several weeks old, so I took the box apart, mounted the drive on a Windows box with a well-known XFS recovery tool, found the deleted files, moved them to another machine, and re-built the MBWE.
It won't boot.
One segment of the LED bar is lit ; the network connected green light beside the network cable is lit (the hub thinks that physical link is up too) ; the machine doesn't respond to the power button or the reset button.
The machine was configured for static IP addressing ; it's not where it should be, and it's not picking up an address from the DHCP server either.

I am guessing that the recovery tool has left the file system in an incoherent state, which is rather disappointing as this is the only XFS recovery tool I've heard of which has good results.
Am I likely to be able to un-brick the machine?

After reading through all the comments and as I have two white light NAS's I plugged the dodgy one into the good one's USB port, however the admin console recognises that a drive is connected however it does show in windows. Below is an extract from the good NAS's logs.

if the partition size do not match, then you cannot "rescue" the disk in place,
you need to purchase a new disk, use the MybookFormat tool to put the system on it,
then you can boot with the new disk, and copy the old datat to the new disk via the usb port.

Will it restore webgui for MyBook White Light newest .14 firmware version?
63 Tuesday, 19 June 2012 00:49
Suddenly I have lost my admin webgui access on my white light. i have the log-in screen to log-in into the webadmin network storage manager page but whatever i did (reset button at the back, unplug->power up + reset for 40 sec) did not help. All other users did not work as well.

-admin/admin, admin/123456 did not work.

I have samba access to white light (admin/admin), SSH console connection

do you know any solution for reset the admin via console before I try this rescue procedure? Will it work with the newest firmware release .14? I did a firmware upgrade via console trying to resolve this issue it did not work I'm still on the same situation.

PS: I saw somewhere in the past Teinturman solution to reset admin pass from the console… Teinturman? :)

I got different hdd at MBWE
61 Wednesday, 30 May 2012 04:42
Hi teinturman

Your tool is definately awesome as it's easy but i got a small problem. I have changed the disk in my MBWE for a WD RE4 WD2003FYYS. Disk was working perfectly, not too hot and somehow i have a more trust in Enterprise series and i keep really important data for me on these drives. Then three days ago something pushed me to make a firmware update and although that entire process went well after the device reboot exactly the same situation like other guys describe here. Bottom let flashing constantly and complitely no access to device - i can't even turn it off different way then unplug the cable.
Is bought your tool but i had to stop because the partition size was different at all four partitions.
Is there any chance to use your tool still to my drive ? I will highly appreciate your help on that as i see that you definately know what you are talking about.
I have also MBWE II with two exactly the same drives in side and i was thinking what will happen if i will change the MBWE II for a two single drive and then i will replace the drive B for the bricked one. Would it rebuild the system only and keep the data or it will destroy all the data too ?
When i bought the first black hdd i putted it directly to the slot B in MBWE II and after just few minutes it was ready, i installed it in MBWE I and all was working great untill i decided to make the damn upgrade.

From the other side i am wondering why such company like WD is releasing upgrade sofrware which is bricking user's device ??? I always had a trust in WD HDD but this really pissed me off as i keep there really important files which i didn't copied yet to my second disk.

See what you can do. I am complitelyl green in Linux but although i have tried to access the disk (carefully in real only mode) with many programs and Ubuntu LIVE CD but the data partition in all these programs always stays unreadable and each program ask forst to formatt it ?

Please try to help if you can.

Best regards

But when I run the Rescue tool, I get...

when i click next i get a Windows Script Host message:

Firmware Upgrade Failure After Rescue
59 Saturday, 19 May 2012 14:22
Timothy Armaly
OK, I tried your suggestion two different ways. First, I did a rescue and then applied the firmware and left it overnight. No change by morning. One light on and a reboot approximately every three minutes. So the next thing I did was a factory reset, and then tried the firmware upgrade. The same thing happened and there was no change after about four hours. The other odd thing is that I have to do an automatic update. The manual update will not work. Any other suggestions?

Is there any way to 'encode' the latest firmware into the rescue process?

Thanks for the help. Tim
Firmware Upgrade
58 Friday, 18 May 2012 13:31
I do hear disc activity so maybe that is possible. I do notice that the drive is VERY warm when I take it out and doesn't seem to be spinning down even though power saving has been checked. I will give it a try over the weekend. I will do the firware upgrade and then let it sit for a couple of days.
Still no love with upgrading

OK, so after I backed up all of my data, I tried doing the upgrade to the latest firmware again. Unfortunately, the same thing happened. It did the update, and after reboot only one light comes on at the bottom which shuts off and comes back on every couple minutes. I can't even do a hard reset with a paperclip from the back. It's just dead. One of the main reasons that I want to do a firmware update is because with the 'recovered' version, the Mybook drops my NIC connection randomly. If there any way to get a Mybookrecover with a newer version of the firmware?

My thanks. At lease it works most of the time. However, if there is a way that I can somehow get the firmware on here, that would be great. Oh, and as an added piece of info, I did try to do a manual update, but I after I hit the submit botton, nothing happens.

teinturman :
Hi , this is very strange,
one other possibility is that after the firmware upgrade, the disk starts a disk check , which can take a very very long time ...
maybe you could wait 24h after the firmware upgrade ( and letting the mybook with its single led ) ...
Will try upgrade again after backup

Timothy Armaly
The NAS, with the new 2 TB drive upgrade, is working perfectly. I may give the firmware upgrade another try, but I am in the process of backing up all my data first. I have been taking a lot of risks with the information so before I go any further I want to be sure that I have a good copy of everything. Once that is done, I will try again. The Mybook is working very well with the firmware version that comes with the rescue program you wrote so I am not complaining. There is very little that will change with the newest firmware update.

I spent hours...litterally....downloading various versions of Ubunto, trying all kinds of tricks. The scripts wouldn't work, the commands wouldn't work. Finally, I decided to donate 10 bucks. Figured the worst that would happen is that I would lose a couple cups of coffee.

15 minutes....that's all...and I had my My Book back! Brillinat. My thanks for the hard work that paid off for me.

I do have one question. After I reepaired the My Book, and tried to apply the latest firmware. It actually bricked the thing again. Any ideas?

teinturman :
hi, thanks for your nice feedback,
first of all, could you retry the process? / MybookRescue then upgrade firmware ?

you might have missed some sure not to shut down the mybook during firmware upgrade...
also, reboot the mybook after the mybook rescue, to ensure that everything is in a stable situation before you perform the firmware upgrade...

Tried a WD7500AAKS
54 Monday, 23 April 2012 05:11
Eric Merkel
I'm rescuing a White Light 1G with a replacement WD 750 AAKS drive. The format and rescue tool ran fine, but the box won't run. I figured its the wrong type of drive in some way.

The Worldbook turns on, the disk spins, seeks a bit, LED is on, then after 45 secs it powers off. No joy. I don't have any green drives around to try.

Are there any tweaks for a 750AAKS ?

Partition Sizes do not match up exactly.

Will this be an issue or can I go ahead and rescue my white light book world?

Twonky upgrade
51 Sunday, 05 February 2012 01:55
Ended up fixing my Twonky by deleting the .ini file with these commands;

cd /DataVolume/jewab
rm twonkymedia-server.ini
sh /etc/init.d/S97twonkyserver restart

So my my media server is up and running again :)

The only problem is that I tried to clone the drive using your tool so that I could just reset the drive but your clone tool to restore the data still doesnt work I even tried your suggestions;

"the Restore menu does work, but depending on internet explorer settings, the link can be inoperant.
in this case, you simply need to connect the drive to the restore folder via \\ipaddress\restoreShare
where restoreshare is the shared folder which is displayed in the restore menu... "

That didnt work either.. Just feeling a little annoyed that I paid money for something that doesnt work :(

teinturman :
sorry, i do not fully understand the situation.

1) you have restored your drive with the Mybook Rescue tool. and this has worked
2) you have then upgraded to the latest firmware
3) you had an issue with twonky which has been resolved.
4) Now , you are trying to use thte MybookClone feature pack to do a backup of your restored Mybook.

does the disk initialization did work ?
what happened when you launched the backup ?
what is the status of the backup ?

can you see the percentage of the backup that has been successfull ?
Rescue Mybook after a restore initial configuration process?
50 Saturday, 04 February 2012 14:41
As always it happends stupidly! but I did a "restore initial configuration" without saving my datas i had on Mybook!

Is this "rescue tool" will help me in recovering my datas?

If not is there any known procedure I can use to do so

Thanks and regards

teinturman :
the rescue tool will not help at all...
and i do not have any recover procedure...

My advice is to stop immediately the mybook,do not turn it on. keep it static, do not write any data to the disk.
extract the disk, and search some "file recovery tool" on internet . ( nearly none of them are free) ...

select one that support unix file recovery
Sorry, i never used these tools myself, so i cannot recommend any tool name...

you will probably need to plug the disk to a computer, then boot some "live rescue cd" ...

How to update
49 Thursday, 02 February 2012 07:27
Hi, First of all id like to say thanks for an awesome tool! Worked great. I was playing around with things and screwd up my drive and your tool saved it ;) Now though my Twonky media server is at version 4. The problem is none of my MP4 files will play on my xbox anymore :( I thought that if I updated the firmware it would update Twonky. But now updated to let latest firmware Twonky doesnt work at all. Now Ill use the tool to go back to version 4, but how can I update it back to 5 to get full functionality again?

Thanks so much,
teinturman :
according to your description, the real issue is that twonky is not working while you have upgraded the firmware.
this is not normal.
have you tried to reboot the mybook ?
what happen when you try to connect to the twonky interface ?
what is displayed when you launch the command :
ps -ef |grep twonky

Hi teinturman,

My Os is Windows7 Ultimate x64.

I tried all diffrend reset types i could find;
- the little button at the back
- the big button at the back
- the reset option in the software

they resset all the paswords and user names except the twonky one!

I also contacted WD support, they couldnt help me and told me to go to Twonky.
I contacted Twonkey, they dont give support for the version installed on the MyBook!

teinturman :
I got it ! you can follow the following tuto, it will reset the twonky password ...

cd /DataVolume/jewab
cp twonkymedia-server.ini twonkymedia-server.ini.bck

vi twonkymedia-server.ini

move the cursor to line 6 with the down arrow :
(if you do not read the "^@" characters, you could read : "accessuser=...." )
type dd ( type the d character twivce)
the line should be deleted.

move with the down arrow to the line 8
if you do not read the "^@" characters, you could read : "accesspwd=...."
type dd ( type the d character twivce)
the line should be deleted.

if you are happy with the lines deleted , type
ESC ( character escape )
: ( character :)
then type enter.

now, you are back to the prompt :

you can now launch the following command :
sh /etc/init.d/S97twonkyserver restart

you can now access to twonky with no password !

Hi teinturman,

The hard drive that i use is an original hard drive from a MyBook World White Light, as far as i know it hasnt been deleted. In Windows i can see my harddisk.

As far as i know its correctly plugged to my laptop.

I cant use the sata port because i use a laptop.

I can see the harddisk in windows Disk management interface, but i can see just one "RAW" partition.

When i put my MyBook together it works normaly. the only problem i have is the reason why i use your tool.
I dont know what my Twonky password is and i dont know how to reset that password.

teinturman :
hmm, this is strange...
what Operating system do you use ? Windows XP ?

==> have you tried to perform a reset via the little button at the back of the device ? the MybookRescue is usually a good idea only when everything else have bneen tried ...
have you already tried :,-password,

I would recommend that youdo not apply the rescue until you have tried all other options...

I also think that new Whitelight devices are coming with GPT partitions, which will only be seen on windows 7 computers...
can you confirm your OS ?
Cant detect harddrive....

When i use this tool i get after step 5 this message

"No Mybook Hard Drive detected... Please, plug your Bricked Mybook Harddrive via an USB adapter , then Click Next."

when i click next i get a Windows Script Host message:

Script C:\MybookRescue\MybookRescue.vbs
Line: 51
Char: 1
Error: Unable to open registry key "HKCU\SOFTWARE\HTA-UI\HDD" for reading.
Code: 80070002
Source: WshShell.RegRead

teinturman :
i think the hard drive you have plugged via usb is not a Mybook Hard drive, or has been deleted, or is not correctly seen by Windows.
if it is supposed to be a mybook original hard drive :
- check that the drive is correctly plugged to the computer.
- try to use the sata port instead o fthe usb adapter
- Check if windows "see" the drive by going into the windows Disk management interface.
does the detected hard disk has 4 partitions ?

also, what mybook model is it ?

44 Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:45

Very slow...

Christopher Czampik
First of all thank you for this great tool.
I connected the HDD via SATA and started the process. But it is very slow. The task dd.exe has a maximal writing speed of 45 kBytes/s. What could be a possible issue?

teinturman :
The normal speed for dd.exe is to see the number increase by 1 Million per second...
i have seen such issue on one of my disks, but then i have given it back to western digital as i assumed it was not working correctly...
if it is a western digital disk, there might be some tools to check the disk's health...
please help
42 Thursday, 04 August 2011 17:09
hello ,
i tryed to resolve my problem with rescue tool but on step 6) Select the Mybook's Hard Drive is dont show up .. and i dont have nothing to chose pr select , please tell me what can i do ? i wish to try format tool but tell me where do you have it,, and how much costs ?

teinturman : first of all, there is nothing additional to pay, you already have downloaded the MybookRescue and MybookFormat Tool.

The issue you have is that windows does not see your disk...
==> this can have several causes :
1) Check that your usb enclosure ( 15€ if you do not have one yet) containing your disk is correctly plugged to your windows computer , check in windows Disk manager if you can see the disk with several small partitions. unplug/replug...
2) Try to use a SATA cable to plug the disk instead...

3) if your disk is still not seen by windows in the Disk manager , then there is a hardware problem with your disk.... check your warranty dates ....

Hi, as i can seee, you have a Mybook Live, i do not have any rescue tool yet for this device.
you should try the following :
1) Wait a bitr of time , to give a chance to the mybook to recover by itself
2) reboot the device
3) try another factory reset...

Great tool!

I have two MBWE, one a gift (now bricked) and a new one via RMA. Kept the brick as I thought I'd play with it. The brick never really worked from the day I took it out of the box, no web interface just an xml error when I loaded the page. Strangely the shares on the drive were available. I acquired the rescue tool and new cables and proceeded removed the drive from its housing.....only to find that the controller board was missing its battery and housing!

Contacted WD to be told they don't do replacement parts and could not help me.... so that's WD off my list of trusted manufactures.

I shall buy a battery and fabricate a housing myself.

Ho Hum!

Does anyone know if it's possible to see these drives on linux if we just pull them out and mount them?

teinturman : Hi,
unfortunately, my MybookRescue tool for MybookLive is not ready yet ...
( in fact it does work already , but some testing is not done, and i need to validate the RAID status of each partitions, and have a few firmware upgrades of a rescued mybook , before i can release the tool ... ) ... some additional engineering is still needed before it can be available... be patient... also, as i do not have a 3TB mybook, i do not know if it will work on such hard drive...(but i guess yes)

Hi Teinturman! Thanks for the tool!
I have 2TB singledisk whitelite. Drive died. Replaced. Run FormatTool and RescueTool. Web interface works. However:

1. in Advanced -> Storage -> Disk Manager:

Disk: HDD 1
Volume: DataVolume
Size: 1.82TB
Description: WDC WD20EARX-00P
Status: Good

2. Advanced -> Storage -> Volume Status:
Volume: DataVolume
Type: Span
Disk: (icon of one disk)
Usage: unknown
Size: Unknown
Status: Failed (clicking on Failed shows "volume not found" message.)

3. in the top of the screen error message: "(date, time) [Volume Status] Data Volume "DataVolume" doesn't exist!"

I can ssh into it and web interface works fine and there were no errors during FormatTool and RescueTool.

What's this problem?

Caviar Green 2TB Upgrade AFTER OE 1TB Failure
35 Thursday, 09 June 2011 15:34
robert baldi
I just thought I would share my experience in case anyone is thinking about upgrading or replacing a 1TB Caviar Green with a 2TB Caviar Green. In my case drive failure forced my hand. It obviously makes sense to go with a 2TB drive if possible and this web site claims it's possible. So I followed every instruction to the letter. Fortunately I have a modern PC with an adapter that has 2 Esata ports and an external Molex plug which allows me to connect an internal HDD up externally. Perfect for this upgrade. So I connected the new 2TB Caviar Green and fired up the PC. To make sure the new drive was picked up, I launched the WD Diagnostic Tool that came with my WD My Books. That confirmed that the new HDD was in fact registering correctly. I then launched Paragon HDD manager just to double check and to also copy all the serial numbers off the drive that WD Diagnostic doesn't show.

Those numbers Are:

WD WCAZA5421674 (WD Diagnostic doesn't show this)

The first thing I did was ran the format.vbs script which didn't take any time at all. I shut down my PC, waited about 5 minutes and restarted it. I then launched the rescue.vbs script and followed all instructions. Making sure I was running the rescue on the right HDD of course. It didn't seem to take much time at all. I wish I would have clocked it to be honest. I recall a message saying that the job was completed. It just seemed like it didn't take any time at all. I was anticipating that it would take between 45 minutes to an hour basd on what I read here.

So it completed and I shut down my PC. I put the WD My Book World Back together and followed the instructions. I powered the unit on and waited about 5 hours before I tried to access it. After 5 hours of so I typed MyBookWorld into my browser and sure enough the GUI popped up asking for a userid and passwrd. Everything seemed great. That is until it became clear that I had no shares and the Data Volume was basically disabled. I forget the exact terminology it used. I tried a few things and I was left with 2 options, Either repeat the process of running the Rescue Tool minue the format OR I could run the built in Tool for re-configuring the My Book World back to Day 1 specs.

So that's what I did. My Data Volume was no good and I had no shares so I ran the built in WD Configuration Utility to completely erase and rebuild the data volume and it WORKED! It worked like a charm. So in the end, this rescue tool did exactly what it was supposed to do. In my heart I think the problem lies in my new HDD Firmware perhaps. I'm using a far newer HDD that was available when this software was written. That's why I posted my Serial Numbers.

So thanks to My Book Rescue for allowing me to repair and Upgrade my WD My Book World so that my Father has his iTunes server once more and the Twonky server is working once again with my PS3. One think I have learned for certain is to NEVER try and transfer more then 5gb of files to the World Book at one time. Large file transfers will lock it up eventually. Also the World Book doesn't play well with Windows 7 starter editions so you'll want to upgrade to home premium but that's about it! Thanks!
New disk does not work in My Book
34 Sunday, 05 June 2011 00:57
Ian Brodie
I recovered 2 empty my book boxes after a change of backup policy at my company and someone taking out the 2TB disk drives to use for something else (sic!).
I bought a new 2TB WD caviar drive, followed the format and recover instructions carefully and when I plug it in the MyBook and boot, I get one light for 10 seconds at one end then a second (at the other) for 5 seconds then 10 seconds later the first goes out (making 25 seconds in all). Needless to say the MyBook is not found (after waiting a long time) even in the router table.
In all 6 partitions were created first time (31Mb, 1.87Gb, 251Mb, 965Mb, 4.5Gb, and 1.87Tb). Reformated making sure the last partition reflected the correct disk size. But still the same problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

teinturman :

as you need to reformat 2 disks, when reformating the disks, you need to do this one by one, ( unplug the other one when youinstall the first ) because macaddress of both mybooks will be the same. ==>
1) shutdown one mybook
2) reboot the other mybook by usijng the button ( not the power cable) ( if you plug the cable, then the mybook will start, then shut down automatically)
3) When the disk has booted, change the macaddress (whitelight only) of the disk using the following procedure via putty :
sh /usr/local/wdc/uboot_env/ 00:90:a9:15:53:de
( for the procedure to change mac address on bluering, please contactme.)
(obviously, you will need to change the macaddress)
4) if the disk still not boot, then reapply the MybookFormat procedure, be sure to remove properly the usbb drive in windows between the format and rescue procedure.
5) reboot, the mybook ( the mybook will boot then shutdown, then you can press the power button.
then, boot the mybook with the new disk and copy the old data via the Mybook usb port (i will send you the command line to perform this operation, ( this operation can take up to 3 days... )

Could you please send me that command line as well

WD MBWE data rescue
32 Monday, 21 March 2011 18:08
I have a bricked White Light drive, I have attache it to a SATA port and power in my PC, and can see the drive in the device manager but not in Windows - I am very keen on trying to get my data off before unbricking it in case I wipe it. How can I get at my data?
teinturman :
it is normal that you cannot see the files in windows, files are stored in ext3 format, which is not recognized by window.

in such situation, i usually recommend to purchase another disk of same / bigger size, then use Mybook Format / Mybookrescue on the new drive,
then, plug the old drive via the usb port of the fresh revived MybookWorld.

then, i can give you some commands to copy the data from the old disk to the new one,

then, when you are happy with your datas in the new disk, you could use MybookClone, to backup your data to the usb disk every night...

Just revived my MyBook WE 2TB with these tools. Bought one 2nd hand, but it did not receive an IP from my router.

FIrst the partitionsizes where not correct, then i used the formattool and after that the rescuetool. All went perfect and really easy. Thanks very much! Really worth the 10 euros!

Installiing the featurepacks now, to further enhance the drive..

Accidentally I edited my /etc/sshd_config to deny remote root login, just to discover that the busybox inside my device have been compiled without the su or sudo I've found myself kicked out from the ssh shell. No soft or hard reset, not even a firmware upgrade gave me back the original sshd.config.
These tools only worked as promised!
Thanks, support and respect to you !

Does anyone have how to re-create the raid array when your doing an upgrade from the 1tb to a 2x2 tb system? I've sort of got it working on via a single drive see below output.

I am looking to extend the data patition if i can. If i need to blow away the currrent partition and re-create is no bother as i haven't put anything on it yet.

Hi from Germany,

After i boot the drive, everything like before. All my Shares, Programs (FPMG) are still there?! What's wrong?!

In response to the guy asking about winXP x64 compatibility, I can report that Win7 x64 works a treat.
then, boot the mybook with the new disk and copy the old data via the Mybook usb port (i will send you the command line to perform this operation, ( this operation can take up to 3 days... )

NAS bricked

Hi, I think I bricked my WD yesterday. It starts when I plug the power cable, run 15 seconds and then stops.
I have a 2Tb edition with 2 1Tb disks.
You say that the rescue don't work with 2 disks editions. I assume that it can't work when we use the 2 disks in RAID0 (2Tb space in 2 disks) but doesn't it work for my case (I use only one disk and RAID1, so the second disk is only used for mirroring...
I assume that I'm in the same case as a 1 disk WD edition, isn't it ?
Did you already test this configuration in the past ?

Thanks & Regards

teinturman :
unfortunately, i do not have the image of the 2Disk - Whitelight Mybook.
I only have the image of the Single disk Whitelight mybook.
==> for the Whitelight, if you apply the Single disk rescue tool , your disk might boot, but i cannot say if it will correctly handle the Raid 1 ( maybe...) Also , there is a risk of data loss...
i would personnally not try such action with my 2 disks in the Mybook...
Also , the western digital interface is slightly different from the single drive and the double drive mybook, i do not know how the double drive behaves with a single drive image...

Sorry for this little info, my personnal advice is the following :
- whatever happend, keep one of your disks containing your data in a safe place and do'nt touch it at all until you have a new running box stable and safe., then you will be able to transfer back your data to your running box.
- if your disk is under warranty : send the box with one of the disks to Western digital... (always keep your data in a safe place)
- at the very very last chance , when then is no other hope, you could try to rescue your double drive, with only one drive plugged, with the single drive MybookRescue Tool. But with no warranty at all for the results....

Thank you.
It worked just as described. I interrupted a firmware upgrade of the MBWE and bricked it. I tried various techniques for many hours and only the MyBook Rescue Tool worked.
Thank you again!

Something went wrong with the rescue

MBWE (white lite 1TB) goes silent after 10-15 seconds of loading.

Ethernet light is on, but the disk is absolutely silent and I cant see mybookworld in my DHCP network.

Before applying the rescue procedure everything worked fine except SSH which I have broken. So MBR is ok.

Any ideas?
Partitions sizes do not match
13 Wednesday, 09 June 2010 17:09
I hve downloaded and run Rescue tool, but the partitions sizes on the my disk do not match to partition sizes in Rescue tool :(
Is the Rescue tool useless in my case?
teinturman :
strange that your mybook does not have same sizes as others...
please, do not apply MybookRescue if size does not match, this could lead to loss of data!

==> the only solution i can propose is to purchase another Western caviar green digital Hard drive,
then use Mybook format to format this brand new disk

then, boot the mybook with the new disk and copy the old data via the Mybook usb port ( i will send you the command line to perform this operation, ( this operation can take up to 3 days... )

then when your mybook is back with the data, you can use the old disk as a Backup disk, permanently plugged to your Mybook.

Western Digital Caviar Green or any other HDD

Can I buy any other hard disk other western digital caviar green as long as the capacity is higher or the same? If the rescue tool does not work??

teinturman : Yes, you can., and it will work, but ...
i strongly recommend to buiy the Caviar Green, as it is the same as the original ones.
Also, on Double drive Mybooks, i even more strongly recommend to select these drives, as to make it work on other drives , some additional hacking is necessary , and i have only few feedback on these non western digital drives.
Great Work

MBWE single drive 2 TB + MBR needed

My MBWE wont boot, i've used the mybookrescue tool to recover the partitions but the drive will still not boot.
Can it be the MBR , if so has anyone got a way to restore the MBR ?

teinturman :
Hello, mbr pb occurs sometimes i do not know why ...
the problem with restoring the mbr is that it will delete all the data on the disk :
What you can do, is purchase an additional disk ( Western digital caviar green model), then use the MybookFormat tool to format the brand new disk with the Mybook image,
then, when you can boot on the new disk, you can copy the old data to the new disk.

the spare disk can then be used as a backup disk to prevent future problems.

Whow! Perfect! I thank you!
Close, but no cigar

The tool works great, but unfortunately didn't unbrick my MyBook. Does the app rewrite the MBR and bootloader, or just the contents of the first 3 partitions?

teinturman :
The MybookrescueTool only applies the 3 system partitions and does not touch the MBR. The data is left untouched

if the MybookRescue did not solve the problem, then you need to go with the "MybookFormat" procedure, unfortunately, this procedure DELETE ALL DATA on the Mybook drive ...

My recommendation is :
If you have some Data, the best is to buy a new Hard drive, use MybookFormat to format the drive as a blank Mybook Hard drive,
boot your Mybook with this new empty hardrive,
plug your old Hard drive via usb (using an usb enclosure) to your Mybook

Copy all the data from the old Hard Drive to the new one.

Then, You can use your old hard drive as a backup drive, and sync everynight your system and data to an external hard drive...

please, use the contact form to get more personnalized support ...
Switch to 2TB?
6 Sunday, 24 January 2010 15:49
Hi, is it with this methode possible to change the 1TB with an 2TB HDD, to have more space on the WD? Or does the Hardware only takes 1TB on an 1TB version of the MBWE?

Teinturman : if you only want to upgrade the size of a working Mybook, then the preferred method is to install the MybookClone Featurepack. It will clone your existing Harddrive to the 2TB, including all your hacks, configuration and data...

if your original hard drive is broken, then you can use the MybookFormat procedure to format your 2TB Hard drive.

Note : both methods DOES NOT WORK with Double Drives Mybooks : only single drive.
if you own a double disk, i have no solution to upsize the disks on Whitelight Mybooks.
This saved my time, soul and brain! :)

Hi there,
I have downloaded this Rescue Files, and set MyBook to work again! :)

The whole procedure lasted about 20 minutes. I unplug the hard drive from a desktop computer and returned to the MyBook enclosure, and started it. And that was it, the whole job! :)

I think it will be more and more people which will be needed these tutorials and rescue files.

Happy New Year and Marry Christmas to all! :)

MybookRescue works fine for me.
I didnt find any help to get access to my bricked device. WD support cant help.
MybookRescue was the only way to me, and it worked very good. Iam not good in technical issues, but this was so easy..

Thanks a lot to teinturman for this great tool!

As I was playing around with SSH in my White Light MyBookWorld 1TB, I did something strange (/sbin/reboot ... I mean, how can that hurt), and surprise surprise, it would not boot up!!!

I tried everything, all the resets described on the Internet, etc. nothing would work.

I was really lucky to find this rescue utility, it was a real life saver. The thought of not having access to any of my data seemed frightening!

The directions are very precise. I did a donation (definitely worth it, I can tell you!!), got my password immediately, downloaded the software tool and was ready to go.

I used the instructions on this site to open the box, very easy, and then I used my SATA-to-USB adapter to connect the hard disk to my laptop.

I run the tool, and the process took around 1 hour 15 mins. After it was finished, I put everything back in, prayed to God, and switched it on. And it worked!

All the settings are back to factory, so you will need to rediscover your MyBookWorld, but after that it was a breeze.

Thanks a lot for creating this, honestly it saved me time and frustration.
